Is ANET a Better AI Infrastructure Play Than Investors Realize?

When most investors picture artificial intelligence infrastructure, they tend to imagine enormous rooms filled with GPUs glowing like expensive space heaters. Nvidia receives most of the attention because its accelerators perform the heavy computational work behind large language models, recommendation systems, autonomous technologies, and increasingly ambitious efforts to persuade software that it should do our paperwork for us.

I understand the fascination. GPUs are powerful, scarce, expensive, and attached to one of the strongest technology investment stories of this generation. They are also easy to explain. More artificial intelligence requires more computing power, and more computing power requires more chips.

But a data center full of accelerators is not automatically an effective AI system. Thousands of processors must exchange vast amounts of information quickly, reliably, and with as little delay as possible. If those accelerators cannot communicate efficiently, a company has essentially purchased an extremely expensive collection of electronic introverts.

That is where Arista Networks enters the picture.

Arista, which trades under the ticker ANET, builds the high-performance networking hardware and software that connect servers, storage systems, cloud infrastructure, enterprise campuses, and increasingly the enormous computing clusters used to train and run AI models.

The company does not manufacture the chips performing the calculations. It builds much of the digital nervous system that allows those chips to function as a coordinated whole.

I believe that distinction is one reason ANET may still be misunderstood as an AI investment. Investors know Arista benefits from data-center spending, but many continue to view it primarily as a premium Ethernet switch vendor—a very good networking company fortunate enough to be standing near the AI gold rush.

I see something more important developing.

Arista is positioning itself as one of the essential architectural suppliers for the AI factory. Its products help move information between accelerators, storage systems, traditional servers, and the outside world. Its Extensible Operating System, or EOS, provides a consistent software layer across that infrastructure. Its CloudVision platform adds automation, visibility, analytics, and operational control.

The investment case is no longer simply that AI data centers need more switches. The deeper argument is that AI is making the network more strategically important, technically demanding, and valuable.

That does not automatically make ANET stock cheap. At approximately $174.87 per share on July 23, the company carried a market value near $223 billion and traded at roughly 59 times trailing earnings. The market has not exactly mistaken Arista for an abandoned warehouse.

My question is more nuanced: does the current valuation fully reflect how important Arista could become to AI infrastructure, or does it merely reflect a high-quality networking company enjoying a powerful spending cycle?

I think the business may be better positioned than many investors realize. The stock, however, already demands a great deal of that potential become reality.

The Network Is Becoming Part of the Compute System

For years, networking was treated as a supporting function. Companies needed switches and routers to move data around, but the exciting work supposedly happened somewhere else.

AI changes that perception because a large training cluster operates as a distributed computing system. Thousands—or eventually hundreds of thousands—of accelerators must work together on the same enormous task. They repeatedly exchange data, synchronize results, and wait for one another.

The faster and more reliably those components communicate, the more productive the entire cluster becomes.

A network failure in a traditional corporate environment might slow an application or disconnect a group of employees. A networking bottleneck inside an AI cluster can leave millions or billions of dollars’ worth of processors sitting idle while the organization continues paying for electricity, cooling, real estate, and the privilege of explaining the delay to shareholders.

At that scale, networking is not a peripheral expense. It is part of the economics of computing.

Arista describes the network as the critical backbone connecting compute, memory, and storage in both AI training and inference workloads. Its Etherlink portfolio is designed to create high-performance Ethernet-based AI fabrics with features that manage congestion, balance traffic, reduce packet loss, improve telemetry, and keep the accelerators productively occupied. Arista’s AI networking overview emphasizes that these systems are intended to deliver high bandwidth, low latency, interoperability, and lower operational complexity.

That may sound like a collection of technical phrases created to prevent ordinary people from finishing an investor presentation. The practical meaning is straightforward: Arista wants Ethernet to become the standard connecting technology inside and around large AI clusters.

If it succeeds, the opportunity could extend far beyond selling more traditional data-center switches.

Ethernet May Be Arista’s Most Important AI Advantage

The battle between Ethernet and proprietary or specialized networking technologies could determine a meaningful portion of Arista’s future.

Nvidia’s InfiniBand has long been a powerful option for high-performance computing and AI clusters. Nvidia also owns the accelerators, networking adapters, switches, software, and other components needed to provide a more vertically integrated system.

That integration is a formidable advantage. A customer can buy a large portion of the AI stack from one supplier and reasonably expect the pieces to work together. Nvidia did not become the dominant AI infrastructure company by being careless about performance.

But hyperscale cloud providers are not always thrilled by the idea of depending entirely on one vendor. They tend to prefer open standards, multiple suppliers, and the ability to design infrastructure around their own requirements. They have spent years using Ethernet across their data centers, and their engineers already understand how to deploy and operate it at extraordinary scale.

Ethernet is familiar, interoperable, and supported by a broad ecosystem.

The traditional weakness was that ordinary Ethernet could struggle with the traffic patterns and performance demands of enormous AI clusters. Arista and the broader Ultra Ethernet ecosystem have been working to close that gap through congestion management, packet spraying, load balancing, telemetry, and other improvements.

Arista’s argument is not that yesterday’s office Ethernet cable can be plugged into a rack of advanced accelerators and asked to believe in itself. The company is developing specialized, high-performance Ethernet products designed specifically for AI.

If Ethernet achieves performance close enough to specialized alternatives while providing greater flexibility, vendor choice, and operational familiarity, it could become the preferred solution for a large portion of the AI networking market.

That is the scenario in which Arista becomes much more than a secondary beneficiary.

It becomes one of the companies defining the architecture.

The Financial Results Suggest This Is Already Happening

I become cautious whenever a company attaches “AI” to everything it sells. Corporate presentations have reached the point where a manufacturer could place a machine-learning sticker on a stapler and schedule an investor day.

Arista’s financial performance gives its AI narrative more credibility.

The company generated $9.006 billion in revenue during 2025, up 28.6% from the prior year. GAAP net income reached $3.511 billion, while non-GAAP net income was $3.806 billion. GAAP gross margin remained an impressive 64.1%. Those are not the margins of a commodity hardware vendor desperately undercutting competitors to move boxes. Arista’s full-year 2025 results showed that rapid growth and exceptional profitability can coexist, at least when a company owns a differentiated software and operational ecosystem.

The momentum accelerated during the first quarter of 2026.

Revenue increased 35.1% year over year to $2.709 billion. GAAP operating income reached $1.158 billion, representing a 42.7% operating margin. Non-GAAP operating margin was 47.8%. Operating cash flow came in at $1.69 billion.

Arista also reported GAAP diluted earnings of $0.80 per share and non-GAAP earnings of $0.87 per share, up from $0.64 and $0.66, respectively, one year earlier. The company guided for approximately $2.8 billion in second-quarter revenue. The first-quarter report also highlighted its universal AI spine and XPO optical technology.

Management subsequently raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to approximately $11.5 billion, implying growth of about 27.7%. It increased its AI networking revenue goal to $3.5 billion, more than double the prior year’s level.

That last figure is the one I find hardest to ignore.

If Arista reaches the target, AI networking would represent roughly 30% of projected 2026 company revenue. This is no longer a small experimental business hidden inside a broader cloud-networking story. AI is becoming one of the company’s largest economic engines.

The debate is not whether Arista has AI exposure. The debate is how durable that exposure becomes after the initial wave of hyperscaler construction.

Arista Sells More Than Metal Boxes

One of my central concerns with any hardware company is commoditization. If several vendors can purchase similar components, assemble similar systems, and sell them into the same market, pricing pressure eventually arrives with a baseball bat.

Arista’s defense is EOS.

The Extensible Operating System is the common software foundation across the company’s networking platforms. Customers can use a consistent operating environment across data-center, cloud, campus, routing, and AI deployments. That consistency simplifies automation, reduces operational friction, and helps engineering teams avoid maintaining a collection of incompatible systems.

CloudVision builds on that foundation by providing centralized management, telemetry, automation, configuration, visibility, and analysis.

The hardware matters because performance matters. But software creates the operational experience that makes customers reluctant to switch.

A hyperscaler does not simply compare the list price of one switch with another. It considers reliability, programmability, support, automation, power consumption, engineer productivity, downtime, deployment speed, and the cost of troubleshooting failures across a network containing thousands of devices.

Replacing a vendor can be technically possible and economically unpleasant at the same time.

That is the kind of relationship I want to see in an infrastructure company. I am less interested in a vendor selling a device once than in a platform becoming embedded in the customer’s operating model.

Arista appears to have built exactly that kind of position. Its reported 2026 net promoter score of 89, with 94% of customers characterized as strongly positive, suggests that customer satisfaction is unusually high. I do not treat a company-sponsored metric as sacred scripture, but it supports the broader evidence that Arista’s customers value the product experience, not just the port count.

That software-led consistency may become even more valuable as networks grow more complicated.

AI data centers introduce enormous traffic volumes, specialized performance requirements, rapidly changing hardware, and growing pressure to automate operations. A network that can observe itself, identify congestion, balance traffic, detect failures, and help engineers resolve problems quickly becomes more valuable as the cost of downtime rises.

The larger and more expensive the cluster, the more important the management layer becomes.

Arista’s XPO Strategy Shows It Is Thinking Beyond Switching

Another reason I believe Arista may be underestimated is that its AI opportunity is expanding into the physical design of next-generation data centers.

In May 2026, Arista highlighted XPO, or eXtra-dense Pluggable Optics. The company says this approach can reduce the number of networking racks by as much as 75% and save up to 44% of floor space compared with conventional pluggable optics.

The percentages are management claims and will need to be proven across real-world deployments. Still, the problem XPO addresses is very real.

As AI clusters scale, moving information becomes physically difficult. High-speed signals must travel between racks while managing heat, power consumption, cable complexity, signal integrity, and limited floor space. Optics are essential, but they consume power and generate heat. Copper can be more efficient over shorter distances, but distance is the problem.

By increasing optical density and reducing the networking footprint, Arista aims to shorten cable runs and make alternative interconnect technologies more practical for scale-up architectures.

This matters because investors often treat networking as a percentage of total server spending. But if the network helps reduce floor space, power consumption, and overall system complexity, its value is not limited to connectivity.

Arista is selling better economics for the entire AI factory.

A customer spending billions on accelerators will pay for infrastructure that improves utilization or lowers the cost of operating those accelerators. Saving a small percentage across a giant data center can be worth far more than negotiating a modest discount on individual switches.

The company that can demonstrate lower total cost of ownership may gain more pricing power than the market expects.

Arista Benefits From More Than One AI Network

AI infrastructure is not a single network.

There is the front-end network connecting users, applications, storage, and traditional computing resources. There is the back-end or scale-out network connecting large numbers of accelerators across racks. There is also an emerging scale-up opportunity involving tightly connected accelerators within a rack or neighboring racks.

Arista wants to participate across these layers.

Its AI Etherlink platforms target high-performance scale-out networking. Its 7800-series universal AI spine supports massive data-center fabrics. Its work around Ethernet for Scale-Up Networks, or ESUN, aims to extend Ethernet into another layer of the architecture.

If Ethernet becomes competitive across both scale-out and portions of scale-up connectivity, Arista’s addressable market could expand considerably.

The company also benefits from the ordinary infrastructure surrounding AI. Training clusters still require storage networks, cloud networking, security, routing, monitoring, campus connectivity, and links to the wider internet.

This is where Arista’s broad portfolio becomes useful. It can offer customers a consistent architecture from the campus to the cloud and into the AI center.

That may not generate the same excitement as a new accelerator. Nobody posts dramatic photographs of a network operating system and declares that civilization has changed. Yet infrastructure spending often rewards the companies that remove complexity.

Arista’s value proposition is essentially that customers can build high-performance networks using open Ethernet standards while managing them through a consistent, reliable software platform.

Boring can be extremely profitable when the thing being made boring is a multibillion-dollar technical headache.

The Hyperscaler Relationships Are Both the Strength and the Risk

The bull case for Arista begins with its relationships with the world’s largest cloud companies. The risk case begins in exactly the same place.

Microsoft and Meta have historically represented a very large portion of Arista’s revenue. Estimates based on company disclosures and industry reporting have placed their combined contribution near or above 40% during some periods.

These customers are valuable for obvious reasons. They invest tens of billions of dollars in data centers, operate at extraordinary scale, and can pull Arista into the most advanced networking problems in the industry.

Working with hyperscalers also gives Arista technical credibility. These companies do not select infrastructure vendors because the sales presentation had attractive transitions between slides. They test products, demand customization, measure performance obsessively, and operate at a scale capable of exposing weaknesses that smaller environments may never encounter.

If Arista can satisfy these customers, it has built something real.

However, concentration creates vulnerability.

If one large customer delays a data-center project, changes architecture, develops more internal networking technology, or shifts spending toward another supplier, Arista can feel the impact quickly. Hyperscalers possess enormous negotiating leverage and the engineering talent to design custom systems.

They are excellent customers and potentially uncomfortable business partners.

I do not view concentration as an automatic reason to avoid the stock. It is the price Arista pays for participating deeply in the largest cloud and AI deployments. But I refuse to treat the relationships as permanent entitlements.

Investors should monitor customer concentration, capital-expenditure plans, and signs that large buyers are adopting internally designed switches or competing network architectures.

Arista needs to keep winning on performance and software. It cannot depend on habit.

Nvidia Is Not Merely a Neighbor

It would be convenient to describe Arista as a neutral supplier benefiting from the growth of Nvidia-powered clusters. The competitive reality is less comfortable.

Nvidia is both an ecosystem partner and a competitor.

Nvidia’s Spectrum-X Ethernet platform directly targets AI networking, while its InfiniBand products remain well established in high-performance computing. Because Nvidia controls so much of the accelerator ecosystem, it can optimize the entire stack and encourage customers to purchase networking alongside the GPUs.

That bundling power should not be underestimated.

A customer facing a complicated AI deployment may choose the integrated Nvidia solution because performance is proven and responsibility is clear. When something fails, there is one company to call rather than a group of vendors politely explaining that the problem probably belongs to someone else.

Arista counters with open Ethernet, interoperability, operational familiarity, and freedom from dependence on a single vertically integrated supplier.

The outcome will probably not be winner-take-all. Different customers will make different architectural choices. Some will prioritize maximum integrated performance. Others will favor open standards and supplier diversity. Many will use multiple networking technologies across different workloads.

Arista does not need to defeat Nvidia everywhere. It needs Ethernet to capture a large and growing portion of AI networking deployments.

Given the scale of projected AI infrastructure spending, a strong second position could still produce enormous growth.

Cisco and HPE’s Juniper business add further competition. White-box switching and internally designed hyperscaler hardware remain ongoing threats. Broadcom supplies critical switching silicon used throughout the industry, which means Arista’s differentiation must come from system design, software, support, and operational execution rather than exclusive control over every component.

This is not an easy market.

The margins make it clear why so many capable companies want a piece of it.

Supply Constraints Are a Reminder That Demand Is Not Revenue

Arista’s first-quarter results were exceptional, but the market focused on supply constraints and pressure on margins.

Memory, silicon, optics, and other networking components have become more difficult or expensive to secure. Arista may need to commit capital earlier, hold more inventory, use costlier alternatives, or absorb higher manufacturing expenses to maintain deliveries.

The company’s Q1 GAAP gross margin declined to 61.9% from 63.7% one year earlier. Non-GAAP gross margin fell from 64.1% to 62.4%. Arista guided for a non-GAAP operating margin of 46% to 47% in the second quarter.

These are still margins most hardware companies would celebrate with a parade. But ANET is valued like a company expected to execute near perfection.

When a stock trades at roughly 59 times trailing earnings, a two-point margin shift becomes a philosophical crisis on Wall Street.

Supply constraints expose an important truth: strong orders do not guarantee perfectly timed revenue. Arista may have demand it cannot fulfill immediately. Costs can rise before pricing catches up. Customers can reschedule deployments. Component suppliers can gain negotiating leverage.

This does not destroy the long-term thesis, but it can create volatile quarters and uncomfortable stock reactions.

Investors buying ANET should be prepared for the market to punish merely excellent results whenever expectations have wandered into the supernatural.

The Balance Sheet Gives Arista Room to Act

One of Arista’s less dramatic advantages is its financial strength.

The company ended the first quarter of 2026 with approximately $12.35 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities, according to management’s earnings-call commentary. Arista carries no conventional debt burden capable of turning a temporary slowdown into an existential event.

That balance sheet gives the company flexibility to secure components, invest heavily in research and development, make selective acquisitions, repurchase shares, and continue building products through economic cycles.

Arista spent approximately $344 million on research and development during Q1 2026, up from about $266 million one year earlier. I view that increase positively as long as revenue and product leadership continue to justify it.

AI networking is evolving quickly. A company that protects short-term margins by underinvesting in engineering may look disciplined for several quarters and irrelevant several years later.

Arista’s VeloCloud acquisition also shows that management is willing to broaden the portfolio beyond its traditional core. VeloCloud adds software-defined wide-area networking and branch connectivity, helping Arista create a more comprehensive client-to-campus-to-cloud platform.

Campus and enterprise networking will probably never generate the same headlines as giant AI clusters. They can nevertheless diversify revenue, expand customer relationships, and make Arista less dependent on a small number of cloud titans.

Diversification is especially important because AI spending will not grow in a straight line forever.

The Valuation Is Where My Enthusiasm Learns Manners

I can admire Arista’s business without pretending the stock price is irrelevant.

At $174.87 per share, ANET’s market capitalization was approximately $223 billion on July 23. The shares traded near 59 times trailing earnings, based on current market data.

That valuation assumes Arista will remain one of the highest-quality growth companies in technology. It assumes AI networking expands rapidly, Ethernet takes meaningful share, hyperscaler spending remains strong, margins stay exceptional, and management continues executing with very few unpleasant surprises.

Those assumptions may prove correct. They are not conservative.

Suppose Arista generates $11.5 billion in 2026 revenue and maintains a net margin around 38% to 40%. That would produce roughly $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion in annual net income. Against a market value near $223 billion, investors are paying close to 49 to 51 times a rough estimate of current-year earnings.

For that price to produce attractive long-term returns, earnings must compound rapidly for years.

If revenue growth eventually slows to the mid-teens, the valuation multiple will probably contract. Even a wonderful company can produce disappointing returns if purchased at a price that assumes too much future success.

This is the central tension in ANET.

The business may be underestimated as an AI infrastructure platform. The stock is not obviously ignored.

I would not call ANET a hidden bargain. Nothing with a $223 billion valuation and a price-to-earnings ratio near 60 is hiding particularly well.

The opportunity lies in the possibility that current estimates still understate the size and duration of AI networking demand.

If AI clusters continue scaling, Ethernet expands into more back-end and scale-up deployments, Arista wins additional hyperscale customers, and enterprise adoption broadens, the company could sustain growth longer than conventional networking models imply.

Under that scenario, today’s multiple may look demanding but defensible.

If AI capital expenditure slows, Nvidia captures more networking content, or Microsoft and Meta reduce their dependence on Arista, the valuation offers little protection.

My Bull, Base, and Bear Cases

My bullish scenario assumes Arista becomes one of the default networking platforms for large AI data centers.

In that outcome, 2026 AI revenue reaches or exceeds the $3.5 billion target, then continues growing at a strong rate through the end of the decade. Ethernet gains share from InfiniBand in scale-out networks and establishes a meaningful role in scale-up architectures. Arista adds at least one major hyperscale customer, expands XPO adoption, and maintains gross margins above 60%.

The campus, routing, and enterprise businesses provide additional growth and diversification. Revenue compounds above 20% for several more years, while operating leverage supports similar earnings growth.

That is the version of Arista capable of earning its premium valuation and potentially outperforming the broader market.

My base case is less heroic.

AI networking grows strongly but becomes more competitive. Arista retains major cloud customers and wins incremental business, but pricing pressure and supply costs gradually reduce margins. Total company revenue growth moderates from the high-20% range toward the mid-to-high teens.

Earnings still rise at a healthy pace, but the valuation contracts as Arista becomes a larger and more mature company. The stock produces respectable long-term returns, though the path includes sharp declines whenever quarterly guidance disappoints.

My bearish scenario begins with a slowdown in hyperscaler capital spending or an architectural shift.

One or more large customers delay projects, move more networking in-house, or increase purchases from Nvidia and competing Ethernet vendors. Arista’s AI target proves cyclical rather than structural. Gross margins fall as networking hardware becomes more competitive, and enterprise expansion fails to offset cloud concentration.

Revenue growth drops into the single digits or low teens while the market assigns the stock a more conventional infrastructure multiple.

The company could remain profitable and financially healthy while shareholders experience substantial losses. A strong balance sheet does not prevent multiple compression.

What I Will Watch Next

Arista’s August 4 second-quarter report should provide several important clues.

I will watch whether management raises its $11.5 billion full-year revenue outlook or its $3.5 billion AI networking target. Given the stock’s valuation, merely reaffirming strong guidance may not satisfy investors.

I will examine gross margin and operating-margin commentary, especially any discussion of memory, optics, switching silicon, tariffs, inventory commitments, and component availability.

I also want more information about customer diversification. New hyperscale wins would reduce dependence on Microsoft and Meta, though they may initially increase operational complexity.

Product commentary around XPO, 800-gigabit Ethernet, the 7800 AI spine, Etherlink, and Ethernet scale-up deployments will help show whether Arista is expanding its role or simply shipping more ports into the same architecture.

Finally, I will watch the language management uses. Arista has historically guided with discipline. A subtle change in confidence, deployment timing, or customer behavior may matter as much as the headline numbers.

At this valuation, investors are not merely buying reported revenue. They are buying years of future execution.

Is ANET Better Than Investors Realize?

My answer is yes—but with an important qualification.

I think Arista is a better AI infrastructure business than the old description of “networking equipment company” suggests.

The network is becoming a central part of AI computing economics. Arista has deep hyperscale relationships, an unusually strong software operating system, excellent margins, a massive cash position, and a growing portfolio that reaches across AI fabrics, cloud data centers, routing, campuses, branches, and network operations.

Its opportunity is not limited to selling more switches because customers purchased more GPUs. Arista can help determine how those accelerators communicate, how clusters scale, how operators diagnose problems, and how data centers manage power, space, and complexity.

That is a strategically important position.

But I also think many investors already recognize at least part of this advantage. ANET’s valuation reflects admiration, optimism, and a near-total absence of secrecy.

I would characterize the stock as a high-quality AI infrastructure holding whose long-term opportunity may still be underestimated, but whose near-term price leaves little room for ordinary human imperfection.

Personally, I would be more comfortable building a position gradually than buying aggressively after a strong run. I would prefer to add during broad technology selloffs, temporary supply-chain fears, or earnings reactions that weaken the share price without damaging the long-term thesis.

I would not chase ANET simply because AI spending is growing. At nearly 60 times trailing earnings, enthusiasm needs a calculator and adult supervision.

Still, I would not dismiss the company as “just another networking vendor.” That description ignores the way AI is reshaping infrastructure.

The most visible companies in a technology revolution are not always the only ones creating durable value. Every accelerator needs memory. Every server needs power. Every data center needs cooling. And every massive AI cluster needs a network capable of turning thousands of expensive chips into one functional system.

Without that network, the intelligence does not scale.

It waits.

Arista is building the infrastructure that keeps it moving.

That may prove more valuable than investors realize—even if the stock market is already charging admission to find out.
